1936 VOYAGE AROUND CAPE HORN BY SCHOONER WANDERBIRD
Produced in 1936, this wonderful old film shows a voyage aboard a schooner named Wanderbird around South America. The captain of this vessel is Warwick M. Tompkins of Gloucester, Massachusetts, who later wrote a book about the journey entitled "50 South to 50 South". For decades, the book has inspired many to seek out their own nautical adventures. The film is rich in imagery of the age of sail, including shots of sailors at work, Gloucester harbor, a woman at the helm of the vessel, a massive storm, becalmed, images of the Altantic and Pacific Oceans, and the Golden Gate Bridge and San Francisco Bay.
