A recent visit to Com-pac yachts gave us the opportunity to see the craftsmen at work on some of their world-class boats.
The Hutchins Company is a family owned-and-operated corporation founded in 1957 by W.L. Hutchins Sr.. Les Hutchins, or “Hutch” to everyone who knew him, was a self-made man from a farming background who became a successful inventor and entrepreneur.
His inventions ranged from automobile accessories to a unique folding high chair. The “Ah-ooo-gah” horns popular on Model A Fords were made by him too.
Com-Pac Regatta – Clark Mills (background) and Les Hutchins were good friends. Clark designed the Optimist Pram, Windmill, Sun Cat and many others.

Com-pac fabricates it’s own stainless on machines they’ve had for over 50 years. They even fabricate SS parts and rails for other boat builders.
Have long viewed Com-Pac as a builder of well-made small boats with a traditional flair, so it was fascinating to get a glimpse of their factory in Clearwater. I was especially pleased to see that your article showed my personal favorite, the CP 27, under construction. Keep up the good work, Com-Pac!
