PredictWind Launches AI Weather Router to Help Cruisers Pick the Right Departure Window

Ask any cruiser what keeps them up at night before a big passage and you will probably hear the same answer: picking the day to leave. PredictWind, the New Zealand marine weather company used by more than a million sailors and mariners around the world, wants to make that call a little easier. On October 26, 2026, it launched AI Weather Router, a new AI feature built into its Weather Routing and Departure Planning tools.

The timing is good. Right now plenty of crews are getting ready to cross the Atlantic from the Mediterranean to the Caribbean, and that kind of trip lives or dies on the weather window.

What PredictWind AI Weather Router Actually Does

First, the important part: AI Weather Router does not make its own forecast. PredictWind’s routing algorithm still calculates your routes using your boat’s performance data and your preferences. The AI then reads those results the way a professional weather router would, and writes you a clear briefing.

That briefing explains how the routes and departure days differ, what each stretch of the passage will feel like on board, and points out details you might otherwise miss. PredictWind says it built the feature with input from professional sailors, weather routing experts and experienced delivery captains.

Go, Proceed With Caution or No-Go

AI Weather Router can compare up to four departure windows and pick out the most favorable one. It then gives you a straight answer: a recommended departure date, a proceed-with-caution, or a heads-up that none of the options you picked is fully recommended. Each option gets scores out of 10 so you can see how it stacks up across individual factors.

Those factors include wind conditions, how long the passage takes, upwind sailing, motoring, rain and potential thunderstorms. The AI works from routes calculated across eight forecast models and breaks the trip into time periods suited to its length, covering expected winds and gusts, changing conditions and any tough sections.

It is also honest about uncertainty. The briefings flag where forecast confidence drops later in a passage, typically beyond about five days, so the skipper can prepare the crew before leaving and keep reassessing once underway.

A Briefing Like the America's Cup Teams Get

PredictWind founder Jon Bilger, an Olympian and two-time America’s Cup winner, knows a thing or two about weather briefings. He forecast the weather for two America’s Cup-winning campaigns, where every morning started with a briefing that turned the forecasts into a plan for the day.

“AI Weather Router gives every sailor that same kind of briefing,” Bilger said. “It reads the routes the way an expert router would, tells you which day to leave and why, and is honest about where the forecast becomes less certain.”

Key Features for Cruisers

  • AI Weather Router briefing: a written summary of your calculated routes that you can go over with your crew.
  • Departure Planning: departure windows side by side, so you can choose the best time to leave.
  • Forecast confidence insights: where conditions build or ease along the route, and where confidence in the forecast drops off.
  • Crew comfort and safety: how your chosen window will affect the crew. Professional subscribers also get boat motion analysis covering roll, vertical acceleration and slamming, plus the likelihood of seasickness, injury and fatigue, how well the crew will sleep and how hard it will be to move around the boat.
  • Key concerns at a glance: a short bullet-point summary that is easy to share with everyone aboard.

Every briefing is specific to your boat and your passage, and the detailed maps, graphs and tables are still right there alongside the written assessment. PredictWind is clear that the tool is meant to support the skipper’s judgment, not replace it. You are still the captain.
