We traded steel-cap boots for bare feet. After a year and a half of twelve-hour days in the Australian mines, covered in red dust, sweating under the desert sun, counting down the days until our next swing home, we can finally sit barefoot on the deck of our dream boat, looking out over turquoise water and palm-fringed islands. The air smells like salt and sunscreen instead of diesel and dirt. The sound of engines has been replaced by the wind through the rigging. We’re Camille and Jesse, a young couple from America and Australia who decided that if we were going to work ourselves to the bone, it should be for something we truly believed in. That “something” turned out to be a 39-foot Jeanneau sailboat named Stella Overboard.
Our story started in the outback of Western Australia’s Pilbara region. We lived in a large mining camp, surrounded by bulldozers, cranes, and the smell of hot metal. The money was good, but the lifestyle was relentless—twelve-hour shifts, for 12 days straight, in 45°C heat. At night, we’d sit outside our rooms, dreaming about a different kind of life. One with saltwater instead of sand, freedom instead of schedules, and time to actually live instead of just work.We started saving every cent. We lived out of a converted truck, sold nearly everything we owned, and worked until we had enough to buy a boat, somewhere, somehow. We didn’t know how to sail. We didn’t even really know what kind of boat we wanted. But we knew we’d find our way.
We chose to look for a boat in Southeast Asia for a few reasons: it was affordable, safe, and filled with one of the most supportive sailing communities in the world. Countries like Malaysia and Thailand are cruiser-friendly, and the waters are calm enough for beginners yet challenging enough to teach you everything you need to know.
After months of searching listings and messaging owners, we found Stella Overboard sitting patiently in Langkawi, Malaysia, a 2007 Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 39i that had seen better days but was full of potential…
