A Sailors’ Pilgrimage: Annapolis

A Sailors’ Pilgrimage: Annapolis

For one thing, there’s the immensity of the spectacle. There are tens of thousands of people exploring over 175 boats and 500 exhibitors connected by two miles of floating docks. For a few days each year, Annapolis is transformed into a reunion of sailors from around the world.

With the number of sailors that come for the show, all of Annapolis is transformed into a sailing party. Anywhere you go, you’ll find cruisers and racers trading stories. Even if you’re not planning a get-together, you are likely to stumble into one.

There is no better place to place to find out what’s new in the sailing world. As the Show is the world’s largest sailboat show, many manufacturers choose to premiere their new boats and gear in Annapolis. There are already seven premiering boats slated for the 2025 show, with more expected to sign on. One exciting matchup will be between the Pegasus 50 and Contest 50CS; both 50’ monohulls making their North American debuts.

The show captures the childlike excitement of flipping through a Sears catalog. There’s a sort of glee that comes with turning the corner and being faced with something new and unexpected. As you walk around the show, you’ll find the latest foul-weather and safety gear, an inflatable gangplank, pneumatic swim platforms, aluminum yacht tenders, and so on. In addition to all the new boats and gear, exhibitors are on hand to tell you about their products and discuss your boat’s needs.

On-site experts are particularly helpful when it comes to electronics. The advent of integrated systems presents a lot of exciting opportunities, but it can be difficult to wrap your head around. These days, you can monitor your bilge pump and fuel levels from an app. AI can plot your course. It’s even possible to trim your sails and change your heading from a smartwatch. If you need the ability to do any of those things is for you to decide, but how you go about doing them requires expert advice, something you’ll find in spades at the Annapolis Sailboat Show.

The exhibitors aren’t the only experts. Again this year, the free seminar series is being brought back by popular demand. The workshops are led by industry insiders with topics ranging from fishing from sailboats to navigating the Erie Canal to taking photos while aboard. There will be plenty of talks for racers to with a rundown of the 2027 Global Solo Challenge and a panel discussion with the women of Allegiant Sailing.
