Keeping Fit While Living Aboard

By Beverly Cheng

Back when I lived in Toronto, I was your classic gym girl. Exercising 5 to 6 days a week, best friends with the squat rack, and making my living coaching others on how to workout too. When we packed up our things in 2022 to move onto our sailboat, the hardest part was saying goodbye to my shiny rack of dumbbells.

“How are you going to workout if you’re living on a sailboat?” my friends all wondered. And I would give them a knowing smile, tap my nose and say “oh, you know me. I’ll figure it out.” But deep down, I was wondering the same thing too.

Living on a sailboat there are a hundred and one things to think about. Constant repairs, never-ending cleaning jobs, the hunt to fill up propane, and of course, hauling your provisioning across a hot city, hoping your frozen shrimp doesn’t defrost before you get home.

Finding time (or the motivation) to workout can easily get put on the back burner. Because what’s more important? Fixing your macerator, or going for a run?

(In my opinion – they’re both equally important. But hear me out)!

Cruising life can be stressful. It’s hard on the body and it’s hard on the mind. We drink more, we move less, and those visions of ourselves eating fresh papaya and mango in the Bahamas isn’t as much of a reality as we would like.

Because of that, sticking to a consistent workout routine is not only crucial for maintaining good health, but to also help you extend your cruising lifestyle for as long as you desire.

Below I’m going to share a few tips that helped me the most when I moved onto a sailboat, plus a few workouts that you can do which require little or no equipment.
