Let’s Talk Turkey!

Let’s Talk Turkey!

By Capt. Jean De Keyser | Med Sailing Adventures

Interested in exploring new charter destinations?  Why not check out Turkey (or Türkiye as it is called now)?  This country does not always show on the sailing radar in the USA, and it is a shame.  Bridging Europe and Asia, it really has a lot to offer and is already a favorite destination for European sailors.

The Gulf of Fethiye, south of Bodrum and across from the Greek island of Rhodes should be on your list. Dotted with green islands and hidden coves, it is close to the airport of Dalaman, and about one hour and a half by plane from Istanbul.

The Gulf is well protected with good sailing winds and offers truly amazing attractions, and, if you ever asked yourself where the name turquoise comes from, it is from the mesmerizing blue color of these Turkish waters.

The city of Fethiye, dates to far historic antiquity, when it was ruled by the Greeks, Lycians, Persians, Byzantines and Ottomans. The old city center, Paspatur, with its bazar and many restaurants is worth a visit and you cannot miss the typical Turkish spa treatment in the 16th century Hamam. You will never feel so clean and relaxed after a massage and deep cleaning session in this historic traditional bath house.

A good point of departure is ECE Marina, home to several excellent charter companies offering modern fleets with a wide variety of well-maintained yachts.

Another option is to charter in Göcek, on the other side of the Gulf. It has six marinas and a beautiful pedestrian city center with lots of stores. The alluring waterfront offers a welcoming promenade with plenty of restaurants and even a genuine French bakery.

Charters start on Saturdays and end on Friday of the following week with the option of staying the last night on the yacht. There is a Carrefour supermarket in the ECE marina in Fethiye and several supermarkets in Göcek where you will find everything you need for your cruise. Forgot something? Don’t worry, there is a Migros supermarket ship that plies the waters of the Gulf. Just dinghy up to the ship, jump on board and find your stuff. Locals also offer the freshest pastries, fruits and vegetables on their wooden skiffs.

Türkiye is a pioneer as far as clean water preservation is concerned and puts a heavy emphasis on the marine environment.  It is one of the few countries in the Med where you can have your black water tank pumped out and your fresh water refilled while you are out sailing.  Just call them on your cell phone, give them your coordinates and they will come over and take care of you for a nominal fee.
