SeaPeople has a message for boaters tired of paying another monthly subscription: the forecast should be free. With the launch of Free the Wind, the boating app is making its premium marine-weather experience available at no cost for the next 100 years. Yes, a century.

This is more than a basic wind forecast. Free the Wind combines 10-day marine forecasts with multiple weather models, including GFS, ECMWF and Google’s WeatherNext 3. Animated wind, gust and wave layers help boaters see what conditions may look like before heading out.

The weather information also connects directly to the decisions cruisers make. Weather-aware route planning shows how conditions are expected to change as a boat moves along its route. Departure Window Planning searches forecasts against a boater’s own comfort limits, while weather-informed anchorage discovery helps identify potentially more favorable places to spend the night. Shareable animated float plans and user-defined forecast warnings round out the tools.

“We didn’t wake up one day and decide the world needed another weather subscription,” said SeaPeople co-founder and CEO Logan Rowell. “We needed better weather to make things we’d already built, like routes, anchorages, destinations and trip planning, dramatically more useful.”

SeaPeople says the goal is to make useful weather information accessible rather than lock it behind another paywall. The company is clear that forecasts do not replace seamanship. Captains still make the decisions, but better information can help them make those decisions with greater confidence.

The Free the Wind campaign will also be part of the Annapolis Sailboat Show, where SeaPeople plans to bring campaign shirts, protest signs and even jars of “free wind” to its booth, YB4. Because apparently the forecast isn’t the only thing they’re making a little more entertaining.
