From Ownership to Ocean Life: How a charter boat in the Seychelles quietly became our home

By Franz & Nadine : Our Days

We wake up before the sun most days now. Not because we have to, but because the boat tells us it’s time. The first light slips in through the hatches, the breeze finds its way through the open companionway, and somewhere nearby a frigatebird announces the morning long before the anchorage comes fully alive.

This is not a holiday routine. There is no schedule to keep, no checklist of sights to see. There is just a coffee, the sound of water against the hulls, and our son Lion, climbing out of his cabin with the casual confidence of someone who has never known a different kind of morning.

Life at anchor in the Seychelles has become ordinary in the best possible way. And that, more than anything, tells us how far we have come.

Before the Boat

For a long time, travel was our way of pressing pause. We were living in Germany, building careers, doing what most people around us were doing. Whenever time allowed, we packed backpacks and left. Mostly for weeks, several times a year, and once in 2016 for a whole year. We chased contrast—salt deserts in Bolivia, waterfalls at Iguaçu, the endless plains of the Serengeti, winter days in Japan, and long drives through Australia and New Zealand. They were fantastic holidays—full of impressions and a truly beautiful time together.

Travel, for us, was never about escape. It was about perspective. We wanted to see how other people lived, what mattered to them, how little or how much was needed to feel at home.

Somewhere along this worldtrip, in French Polynesia, that curiosity took an unexpected turn.
